Cooking on an open flame? Dangerous?

Sometimes, I put bread directly on an open flame on my (gas) stove before eating. I discard any black carbon residue areas on the bread, but is the bread still safe to eat?

well the reason why its burning is because on the grill you have it directly over the flame, if you move it so it isn’t directly over it, your food will actually have a chance of cooking thoroughly, for the black residue thing, its actually okay to eat most stuff if its slightly burned, take grilled chicken for instance, the grill marks are dark brown almost black, thats still burnt and you still eat it, some burnt food is okay to eat.
