This is a simple way to cook meat on the grill from George Foreman?

I know nothing about cooking, any help is appreciated. I saw a video on youtube of the grill, GF, and the man in the video put the olive oil, salt and pepper on grilled meat then directly. What is the purpose to rub olive oil on the side of a steak before putting salt and pepper in the meat? Thanks
