What do I need to do to prepare a capped gas line in my back yard for a natural gas grill?

When our house was built, the builder put in a gas pipe to the outside. It is about 3-4 inched long with a cap on it. I am considering purchasing a natural gas grill, but want to factor in the expenses associated with preparing the line for the grill. What do I need? Or should I leave it to a plumber?

The BBQ will have to have a natural gas burner in it. Natural gas burns different from propane and the burner has to have smaller holes in it, otherwise it gets too hot. You also need a standard natural gas supply line, as opposed to the gas line that connects to a propane tank that comes standard with a BBQ (the ones with the pressure reducer in line). This should screw onto the gas supply line (the part that the cap is threaded on to). If you don’t have a cutoff valve on the pipe, you should install one. You should to be able to isolate it when the grill isn’t being used. Just make sure to turn off your gas supply at the meter and purge the lines (turn on a stove burner to reduce the pressure in the lines) before removing the cap.

Just go to the BBQ section at the Home Depot or whatever, and tell them what you’re wanting to do. They’ll be able to help you find all of the parts and materials you need for the job.
