Does anyone know how they made them huge blocks of ice…?

before household refrigerators were available? Or do you know who invented the first ice machine and how on earth they cut it so perfect like how you see them huge blocks of ice being drawn by horse and buggy during the 20′s? I mean even if they weren’t cut as neat, just the idea of such a large ice making and cutting factory? So I guess I want to know then, who was the first Iceman? Thanks.

They were produced in an industrial ice house. A large tank, sort of like a swimming pool, is filled with brine that is circulated throughout the tank. The brine is cooled to ~26-28 degrees F through the use of large compressors (driven by electric motors) that cool a refrigerant.

Then, at least in the ice house where I worked, four rectangular containers (about 4 feet tall by 2 feet deep by 1 foot wide), attached to a common fixture, were filled with water and set in the brine tank to freeze. Our tank held about 144 of these “grids”. Once frozen, the grid was removed from the tank, submerged in water to thaw the ice from the containers, and then dumped. Each block was then scored by saws down the middle from top to bottom and in three places from side to side along its length.

Each block was three hundred pounds of ice and, with an ice pick, could easily be knocked down to fifty or twenty-five pound blocks using the scoring cuts.

After the blocks are scored, they are pushed through a little door into the freezer where they are stood up and organized. Some ice would be sold as blocks (generally to seafood companies) and some would be crushed and sold as bag ice.
