Why can’t I use a glass baking dish in a toaster/convection oven?
Just bought a new glass baking dish. The instructions say it’s safe to use in the oven and microwave oven. But it warned against using it in a toaster oven. I have a large toaster/convection that sits on my kitchen counter. Can I use the glass baking dish in it?
Yes, you can use glass bakeware like that in a *large* toaster/convection oven (or if you are cooking in a regular size convection oven) as long as you don’t set it for Broil, and you pre-heat.
Glass bakeware isn’t good to use for the higher heat that would result from toaster oven coils (or stovetop coils or flames) actually touching or being very close to the glass though, mostly because the glass can shatter if it’s cooled too quickly (or is placed on a cool surface, for example) while it’s still really hot. Also surprisingly, thick glass doesn’t do as well as thin glass when changing temperature rapidly.
Convection cooking is just heated air though that’s being *blown around* the cavity of an oven, so the heat reaching the glass would be pretty much the same as if the bakeware were in a regular oven (i.e., not close to the any coils, etc).
