Use charcoal in propane grill?

I got a well used propane bbq grill for free at garage sale. Am I supposed to use charcoal in the bottom of it just above the burners?
There is a metal plate mounted above the burners that has louvers in it any idea what it is used for?

Don’t use charcoal whatever you do.
It is to direct the heat to all areas of the cooking surface.
Many grills have either lava rock or ceramic brickettes but it does not sound like yours needs one.
Try cooking the basics on the grill first to see how well it works, then move on the other things that would involve using wood chips to add flavor to what you are cooking. Look online for cooking suggestions for what to try with what foods
